 Appreciation

Why is a naked woman feeding her child in the open as a thunderstorm looms in the distance? Is this painting just an excuse to depict a poetic landscape, or does it have greater significance? No one has in fact been able to identify the subject of this picture, although many theories have been put forward. Indeed, much controversy surrounds this artist,

There are no signed and dated works by him and matters are further confused by the fact that after his early death, many of Giorgione's pictures were completed by his pupils, including Titian. Of all the Venetian painters Giorgione embodies the best of their painterly style,

His loose, light brushstrokes and handling of colour and tone are all hallmarks of Venetian painting. Centuries after his death, Giorgione's pastoral landscape were still much admired, and influenced great landscape painters such as Nicolas Poussin.

About the Artist

Giorgione (1477/8 – 1510) was a Venetian painter of the High Renaissance in Venice, whose career was cut off by his death at a little over thirty. Giorgione is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are acknowledged for certain to be his work. The resulting uncertainty about the identity and meaning of his art has made Giorgione one of the most mysterious figures in European painting.

Together with Titian, who was slightly younger, he is the founder of the distinctive Venetian school of Italian Renaissance painting, which achieves much of its effect through colour and mood, and is traditionally contrasted with the reliance on a more linear disegno of Florentine painting.
